Christmas is a time of year that our household always gets excited about, even before we had children. This year however with an almost 4 year old daughter and a 18 month old son it’s especially exciting. We are trying really hard to impress on our kids that Christmas isn’t just about the gifts but also about the giving and being with each other and loving others.
One of the best ways to help get this kind of message into their heads is through books. Enter “Happy’s Christmas Gift” by Geoff Parker Sr. and illustrated by Lisa Fox. I was lucky enough to be able to review this book and when I first got it I just knew my daughter was going to love it. We recently adopted a Yorkie mix who is now about 6 months old and the little dog in the story named Happy just so happens to be a Yorkie! Aydia immediately saw the front cover and said, “He’s just like Tucker! In a Christmas hat, he’s so cute!!!” Once we got past the cover and “oh how cute he is!” she was just as enthralled with the story itself.
The story itself is wonderfully written and honestly I almost got a little choked up at the end the first time reading it. It follows Happy on an adventure to the post office to deliver a letter dropped by a sweet homeless girl and he accidentally ends up taking a trip to the North Pole himself! The story teaches compassion, how to be a good neighbor, and loving one other without being to overbearing. The pictures were so vivid and bright and held her attention. There were several times when I was done reading the page that she didn’t want me to turn it yet because she was still looking at the pictures. Even my 18 month old son who has the attention span of a gnat stopped to sit on my lap through at least 4 pages! (That’s a huge thing folks!)
For those who are bilingual in Spanish, or are trying to learn to be, the book also comes in a paperback version which has both the English and Spanish translations in it. When you order the book, either the English hard cover or the bilingual soft cover, you also get a free Happy poster, which my daughter has insisted needs to be hung on her bedroom door. You can purchase a stuffed Happy toy from their online store as well which we received and Aydia has to make sure he reads the book with us every time. Also right now Happy Tales Publishing currently has their 2nd annual coloring contest going on through December 15th! Go to their website and click on Coloring Contests for more information.
Happy’s Christmas Gift is available from Happy Tales Publishing. The hard cover version is $19.99 and the bilingual soft cover is $14.99 and include the free shipping. At the end of November they will also be releasing a new book staring Happy called “Happy As A Fox” which is also going to have both options of either English or Bilingual and if you buy both together you’ll save 40%.
One lucky Freckleberry Finds reader will win a copy of Happy’s Christmas Gift and a plush toy Happy. Ends 12/11. Open to US and Canada.
